This program is designed for leaders in strategic roles who are called upon to make complex, cross-organizational decisions, and would like to gain a thorough understanding of finance-based decision making by exploring the many ways companies make money and the implications of each.

Program participants will earn 4 credits in the Business Acumen discipline toward the LIMRA Leadership Institute (LLIF) designation.


In this program, you will take a comprehensive look at profitability sources, capital management issues, rating agencies, industry-specific accounting practices, and M&A activity. Using a computer-based simulation, you will gain a realistic, executive-level view of the business through the strategic and tactical decisions leaders make.

Ann Martel, CPA is a highly regarded business leader with a passion for finance, education, and delivering high-energy programs on the topics of business acumen and improving personal results. As Owner of Martel + Associates, she has worked with clients such as WellPoint, Inc., National Government Services, and Marquette University. From 1992 to 2016, Ann served as Adjunct Faculty – Accounting and Finance at Marquette University, where she designed and delivered these courses in the College of Professional Studies. She is also a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Wisconsin.

Dan Topf, CPT is Senior Vice President of Management Development International, Inc. In this role, he designs, leads, and implements learning and development initiatives aligned with clients’ strategic goals. He serves as the lead facilitator of MDI’s business simulations and business acumen programs. Dan has worked with numerous organizations across various segments of the financial services industry, and he understands their unique point of view. Previously, he served as Adjunct Faculty at Iowa State University and Drake University — and was on the Leadership Development team at The Principal Financial Group.
