WINDSOR, Conn., May 3, 2010—Despite the fact that more than 70 percent of American households rely on two incomes to make ends meet, only 26 percent of American households have any type of disability insurance, according to LIMRA’s research.

“It’s important to remind Americans that protecting and providing for yourself and your family in the event of a disabling accident or illness is an act of love,” said Robert Kerzner, president and CEO of LIMRA, LOMA and LL Global. “LIMRA is proud to join The Life Foundation to support Disability Insurance Awareness Month and the Protect your Paycheck campaign.”

May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month. To promote this event, The Life Foundation has launched Protect Your Paycheck campaign, which includes a tool kit, marketing guides, eCards, and Webinars for producers and insurance companies to use.

In addition, LIMRA has created a downloadable multimedia piece consisting of short videos and a disability insurance fact sheet. This piece was developed to provide producers and LIMRA member companies with material to help educate consumers about the importance of purchasing disability insurance.

“Only about one in five people even recall being approached about buying disability insurance,” said Kerzner. “We have to do a better job reaching out and educating consumers about the value of disability insurance and the protection it provides.”
