WINDSOR, Conn., July 9, 2025 — A new LIMRA study finds 7 in 10 workers are at least somewhat satisfied and 43% are highly satisfied with their overall benefits packages. That said, 1 in 5 workers (19%) say they are dissatisfied with their benefits packages, according to LIMRA’s 2025 BEAT Study: Benefits and Employee Attitude Tracker
Historically, employers have used their benefits offerings to attract and retain the best talent. Over 6 in 10 employees say their benefits packages make them more inclined to stay with their current employer, with 41% saying their benefits make them much more inclined to remain. Conversely, 20% of employees feel less inclined to stay, especially if they are dissatisfied with their benefits packages.
LIMRA research shows there is a well-established link between understanding the benefits available and satisfaction.
Strategies for Improving Understanding and Satisfaction:
Employees who understand their benefits are more likely to be satisfied with them. Over 7 in 10 employees who understand both their insurance and retirement benefits extremely well are very satisfied with their benefits, compared with much lower satisfaction among employees who do not understand their insurance or retirement benefits at all (18% and 22% respectively).
One strategy to improve employees’ benefits understanding is for employers to offer total compensation statements (see sample). These statements provide the total monetary value of employer-paid benefits.
LIMRA data show that employees are more likely to understand their insurance and retirement benefits when total compensation statements are available.
“Total compensation statements give a clear picture of how much employers invest in their employees,” explains Kimberly Landry, associate research director, LIMRA Workplace Benefits Research. “Our data finds only 42% of employees say they receive these statements, creating a gap in how employees both understand and experience their benefits.”
The 2025 BEAT Study suggests that in-person educational resources can be another way to improve employees’ benefits understanding. While email is the most frequently available resource, just 48% of employees found it to be the most helpful.
In-person, one-on-one meetings (81%), in-person group meetings (67%) and speaking with someone over the phone (63%) ranked as some of the most valuable educational resources. This suggests that employees appreciate receiving personalized guidance and the ability to ask questions.
Employee satisfaction also tends to increase when employers offer more insurance benefits. Just a quarter (27%) of employees were satisfied with their benefits packages when offered one to three insurance benefits, rising to 63% when 10 or more benefits are available.
Additionally, meeting employees’ demand for benefits can improve satisfaction. Pension plans had the highest level of unmet demand, with 29% of employees wishing they had this benefit but not having access to it, according to the 2025 BEAT Study. While most employers no longer offer pension plans, it might be possible to meet this need through other sources of guaranteed retirement income, such as in-plan annuities.
Critical illness insurance (27%), emergency savings benefits (27%), cancer insurance (26%) and hospital indemnity insurance (23%) round out the top five unmet benefit needs.
LIMRA research demonstrates comprehensive efforts to educate employees about their benefits will have a positive impact. Using total compensation statements, offering one-on-one personal meetings, and addressing unmet demand are effective tools to help more employees get the most out of their benefits. As LIMRA data shows, employees who are satisfied with their benefits are more likely to remain with their employers.
