Spotlight on Bob Bastian, CIO and CTO at Prudential Financial

While I’ve led large-scale transformations and delivered measurable outcomes, I’m most proud of seeing people who have worked for me grow into senior leadership roles across Prudential and other major organizations. Their success is theirs alone — but knowing I played a small part in their journey is deeply fulfilling. I strive to lead in a way that builds capability, not dependency. The true legacy of a chief information officer (CIO) isn’t just in systems or strategy — it’s in the future leaders that we help shape today. Technology evolves quickly, but it’s people who carry transformation forward. Creating space for talent to thrive — that’s what endures.
At Prudential, innovation is central to creating experiences that blend the best of human expertise with the efficiency of technology. At the heart of everything we do is the customer and our ability to serve a consistent set of needs across many different markets. AI automation and real-time data allow us to anticipate needs, provide proactive guidance, and personalize interactions at scale.
For customers, this means greater convenience, faster resolution times, and services tailored to their unique financial goals. For our teams, it means more time to focus on building meaningful relationships and delivering the kind of empathy-driven service that technology alone can’t replicate.
With expanded responsibilities as CIO and chief technology officer (CTO) across our global retirement and insurance businesses, my primary goal this year is to unify our technology strategy across markets — especially U.S., Japan and Brazil — by identifying synergies, sharing best practices and expertise, driving efficiency, and fostering ongoing collaboration. I’m focused on bringing teams together, finding common ground, and building scalable solutions that serve both local and global needs. Technology will continue to be a growth engine for our business, and I’m committed to ensuring it enables innovation, leadership, and long-term value. Ultimately, it’s about empowering people and creating a resilient, future-ready organization.
AI — especially Agentic and Generative AI — is transforming how we engineer solutions, personalize customer experiences, and scale innovation globally. It’s accelerating development through intelligent coding, automating routine tasks, and enabling systems to act with autonomy. This frees our teams to focus on strategic, high-value work while uncovering deeper insights and driving operational efficiency. AI is helping us build more connected, adaptive organizations and deliver tailored experiences at scale. It’s not just a tool — it’s a growth engine embedded in our strategy, reshaping how we learn, collaborate, and deliver value globally.
I’d describe my leadership style as one that balances high expectations with deep trust. I believe the best results come when you give talented people the autonomy to do their best work while providing them with a clear sense of purpose and direction. My role is to set the vision, remove obstacles, and ensure the team feels empowered and supported. This approach has shaped a culture where people feel ownership over outcomes, where collaboration is the default, and where we embrace continuous learning. When leaders trust their teams, teams rise to the occasion — often exceeding what anyone thought was possible.
It starts with listening — to both customers and the teams who serve them. We involve end users early in the design process and continually gather feedback to refine our solutions. Our platforms are built with flexibility so we can adapt them to different customer segments and preferences. The goal is to meet people where they are, providing relevant, timely, and empathetic interactions that feel personal rather than transactional.
We use interactive, data-driven tools to translate complex topics into clear, actionable information. Visual dashboards, AI-powered Q&A tools, and personalized recommendations help customers see the relevance of our products in their own lives. By simplifying the language and experience, we’re able to break down barriers to understanding and make financial topics more approachable.
I see the committee becoming an even stronger catalyst for industrywide innovation. As the pace of change accelerates, the need for a trusted forum where leaders can exchange ideas, align on emerging standards, and collectively address challenges will only grow. The committee will play a critical role in helping the industry navigate areas like AI governance, data privacy, and customer trust.
